Reigning Dutch champions going for fifth successive women’s Euro title

Reigning Olympic, World Cup and European champions, the Netherlands are looking to continue their incredible run which has seen them go unbeaten in the EuroHockey Championships since 2015.

This tournament does offer opportunity for new faces as the new cycle begins after the Olympic Games with Maria Verschoor retiring, Laura Nunnink out with a long-term injury and Felice Albers not quite recovered fully to take part.

As such, this tournament is a first major final tournament for Fay van de Elst (AH&BC Amsterdam), Pam van der Laan (Pinoké), and Danique van der Veerdonk (‘s-Hertogenbosch).

National coach Raoul Ehren: “Fay has been part of the team all year and has performed very well in the FIH Pro League matches. Including her in the European Championship squad was a logical choice for us.

“Danique and Pam joined from the last Pro League block in their home country and have proven themselves. They continued this after our break and secured their place.”

Marleen Jochems (SCHC) is also back in the squad after missing the last few Pro League matches. “We’ve mapped out a plan with Marleen after she wasn’t fit enough for the last FIH Pro League block.

“This means she trained hard during our matches and vacation to get fit. Now that we’ve restarted after the break, she’s fully back and physically fit. We’re happy to add her back to the squad,” said Ehren.

Albers (AH&BC Amsterdam) is missing from the squad compared to the past few matches. Ehren: “Felice isn’t fit enough to play in the European Championship. It’s a huge shame for her, but also for us as a team, because Felice is incredibly important to the team.”

Until the European Championships, Eline Jansen (Kampong) and Noor van den Nieuwenhof (Kampong) will continue to train with the group to cover for any injuries.

National coach Ehren is looking forward to the European Championship: “It goes without saying that we, as the Dutch Women’s National Team, are only aiming for one place, and that’s to win. We’ve come out of the short break strong. The women look fresh and fit again. Everyone is really looking forward to the European Championship; we’re excited!”

They are going for a fifth successive title with goalkeeper Anne Veenendaal linking each event dating back to 2015. Coach Ehren is looking for his first gold with the team having taken silver when in charge of Belgium in 2023.
