EuroHockey joins SAFE project kick-off meeting

EuroHockey joined a diverse consortium of more than 10 sport organisations in Brussels in March as part of the SAFE (Safeguarding Approaches Focusing on Grassroots Sport Environment) project.

SAFE focuses on changing how staff members and volunteers in grassroots sport think about safeguarding. By shifting mindsets and approaches, the project aims to create lasting change and support safer, more inclusive sport environments through practical tools and learning opportunities.

It is coordinated by the European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation and officially started in January 2026. March was an important milestone when partners gathered in Brussels for the Kick-off Meeting, hosted at the EU Office of the European Olympic Committees.

The consortium represented a wide range of expertise from across Europe. It marked the first in-person opportunity to connect, exchange ideas, and align on the project’s shared vision.

What’s next?

Several key steps are already underway:

  • Regular online meetings throughout 2026
  • Collection of good practices and tools on safeguarding from all partners
  • Development and testing of the SAFE toolkit
  • Creating a beta version of the SAFE micro-learning app
  • Planning of a mid-term workshop in 2027
  • Launch of communication activities to share project progress

Looking ahead

The SAFE project is now moving into its first phase of work, focusing on gathering knowledge and developing practical solutions for grassroots sport.

ENGSO and its partners will continue to share updates as the project progresses—stay tuned!
