Sanders stars in special 150th game in orange

Pien Sanders crowned her 150th cap in special style as her two goals helped the Netherlands sweep aside Germany 5-1 and move to the brink of the semi-finals.

It took barely 35 seconds for the Dutch to hit the front, a swift move saw Fay van der Elst move along the left baseline and cross perfectly for Freeke Moes to touch in.

The second was not long in coming, Luna Fokke the instigator on the other side of the circle to lay up Frédérique Matla in the middle.

And the first quarter was still not done as Joosje Burg’s trickery was followed by a dinked pass which made it all the way to Sanders who got her first goal of the day.

Lena Micheel thundered a hit from a penalty corner to cut the gap to 3-1 in the 19th minute but the Dutch replied quickly. Marijn Veen’s run and a Pien Dicke shot created the chance and Sanders did the rest with a backhand swipe.

All that happened in the first half with the second half providing less fireworks. Germany provided much more of a contest, forcing a number of saves from Josine Koning.

But the Dutch finished it off with Veen sneaking in another goal in the closing six minutes.
