HOCKEY IN MALTA
As far back as 2nd January 1906 and advertisement appeared in the ‘Daily Malta Chronicle’ which read: ‘Hockey Sticks to suit all buyers by 30 different makers. From 35 upwards. Apply to Muscat Athletic Outfitter, 270 Strada Reale, Valletta. Sports Catalogue Free.’
Hockey competitions were held regularly in the 1930s and the game fell under the auspices of the Malta Sports’ Association, which organized league and knock-out tournaments, annually up to 1968.

Improvements to the facilities at the complex have been ongoing. Major works carried out led to the laying of an artificial grass surface in 2003, which resulted in the upgrading of the complex to international standards. This has enabled the champions, Rabat Depiro, to be entrusted with the organization of the European Challenge II in 2004 and 2005 and the Association to host the European Nations’ Hockey Challenge II last September during which tournament Malta placed second.
